K6ARK Portable Radio
США
Добавлен 24 дек 2007
Hello RUclips friends! I'm Adam, K6ARK, a ham radio geek who operates mostly outdoors. On my channel, you'll find videos of my SOTA adventures and portable radio-related projects. Hope you have as much fun watching these videos as I do making them.
Never thought I'd see this in Joshua Tree
On May 10, 2024, a train of seven plasma shockwaves from recent solar flares impacted Earth, triggering a G5 geomagnetic storm. The results were spectacular.
Leading up to the weekend, I had been watching the geomagnetic storm forecast after noticing multiple significant solar flares up to X3.9. www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/3-day-geomagnetic-forecast
A G4 storm was initially predicted, but @TamithaSkov predicted a significant event. So, in addition to my climbing gear, I packed my nicer cameras and fast lenses. The skies did not disappoint!
Sorry for no hamming in this one, but I hope you all enjoy the show anyway.

Smallest possible all-mode POTA kit?
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
Minimalist radio fun in the form of a challenge? Yes please. When @HamRadioCrashCourse proposed the 1 lb POTA Pack Challenge, he had to have known I'd take it as far as I could. An upcoming work trip presented the perfect opportunity. I prepped the "Classic Band" modified truSDX with audio amplifier circuit, larger display, and thinner/flatter filter design, and paired it up with a minimalist E...
Trips like this are why I bought the Elecraft KH1

With good snow conditions from a recent storm, I set out with a few friends from the Mountain Rescue Team to climb and ski Mt. Baden Powell in March 2024. I capped it off with a quickie Summits On the Air (SOTA) activation using the KH1 and a new prototype KH1 pressure paddle I've been designing (more to come on that). So check out the video and join us for the adventure. www.k6ark.com

@ThomasK4SWL tipped me off on a MTR5B for sale, and I couldn't pass it up. After tuning up a 40m EFHW to operate on all 5 bands, I rounded up N1CLC and we headed out for a holiday Monday activation of a local summit. Here's our adventure. If you're interested in seeing an unedited version of this with full-length QSOs, I've uploaded a long-cut version here: ruclips.net/video/MzZJmPSX7r4/видео.h...
SOTA Madness - 250+ mi 2m CW and ZL S2S
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Every year, the SOTA geeks in Arizona coordinate a "10 point Madness" event where many of them summit high peaks in AZ and try to work lots of summit-to-summit contacts. Living in SoCal, that event is a fun opportunity for me to try working long distance 2m contacts. This year wasn't the best for 2m propagation, but I brought another new antenna for HF which paid off well. Enjoy! Summit is Apac...
HRWBOTA What? @HamRadioWorkbench On The Air!

The crew from the @HamRadioWorkbench podcast hosted a fun on-the-air event December 3rd called Ham Radio Workbenches On The Air (HRWBOTA). To me, it sounded like a great excuse to get out and operate from a SOTA/POTA and get as many of the guys in the log as possible. Here's my adventure. If you're not familiar with the Ham Radio Workbench, check it out. www.hamradioworkbench.com Every couple o...

This trip, I take Josh from @HamRadioCrashCourse and his son Ben out backpacking to an otherwise typical Eastern Sierra lake that holds a special place in my heart. Trips to this place were formative in my life, helping to instill a love for the mountains, particularly the Eastern Sierra. This time, we merge Ben's first backpacking trip, first time trout fishing and fly fishing, and his first P...
Gear Failure Cuts Our SOTA Ski Trip Short
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.11 месяцев назад
A 4 day trip turns into 2 when gear failure strikes us on an attempt at reaching two intimidating Sierra backcountry summits. Memorial Day weekend, 2023, I set out with a few of my SDMRT teammates to summit Mt. Darwin and Mendel. The epic snowpack made for great conditions despite road closures, and we had high hopes for some great summits. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Still, we managed...
Backcountry Ski Portable Radio in the Sierra

With record snow in the Sierra, two previous attempts to get to the big mountains for some snow fun were thwarted by weather and road conditions. But this time, we made it. With a blue-bird day and a deep snow-pack covering the sierra peaks, Erin, Brooks, Kevin, and I set out for a ski touring attempt up a fun little peak North of Mammoth Lakes, CA. Here's the story.

I wrap up day 2, adding one more summit and SOTA activation attempt and then starting my hike back out to the Onion Valley trailhead. On the way, I encounter more hikers, including one who needed some help. Hope you enjoy coming along for the adventure.
Sierra Solitude - Part 2: The Hardest Rock Climb in North America (in 1896)

After a great start to the trip, I finish up the trek to camp in the Sixty Lakes Basin, get a good night's rest, and make an attempt at one of the most remote and difficult Sierra summits - Mt. Clarence King. Towering over the center of the Rae Lakes Loop, Mt. King is a centerpiece of the region and a peak whose summit is sought by many a climber to bask in its beauty and its amazing history. T...
Sierra Solitude - Part 1: Into the Wild Mountains

The first part of day 1 of this trip brings quickly into the remote wilderness, as I climb over a technical pass - a shortcut to a remote region of the Sierra Nevada. I decide to attempt a rarely climbed peak as a bonus, and to try to snag the first SOTA activation. Short on water, and struggling from the thin air, I encounter some awesome wildlife and have a blast wearing myself out on some tr...

With “High Band” and “Classic Band” RF boards individually available now from a DL2MAN approved manufacturer, I wanted to make a new case that allows for easy swap of the RF board without having to disassemble the complete case. unbelievable!! cool cool video
It's looks like a bit smaller than 1m in diameter, isn't it?
You're so crazy. Love it.
So how much power was involved? What range?
The radio puts out about 700 mW. 40 m propagation results in shorter hops during the day, so I think the longest contacts were 800 - 1000 miles.
Can you understand that listen speed? Or does the radio translates it?
The radio does not decode, I have practiced a lot to be able to understand what is being sent as I hear it.
@@K6ARK good job, and thank you
So, the CIA came out with a survival kit that fit up the bum. You know where I'm going with this. Let's make it happen, a complete transceiver that stores inside a waterproof aluminum storage capsule!
the built in key is so cool!
will more of these become available?
I LOVE That I Inhereted BUNCH Of Capacitors, Radio Capacitors and TONN Of Other Radio related Stuff From A KGB Aaggentt, I Have Militatry Grade Stuff That Can Hold 2000Watts And Stuff Like That, HUGE TTorroid Rings, Like, You Can Put Your Hand In it If You Aint Huge ;D So Much Stuff, Caps From 7pf to 450 i saw One so jeah,. variaaty is crazy.
I LOVE TO MAKE MY OWN FILTERS AND CHOKES.
1. Does it rub your neck? 2. Will it comfortably fit a BK radio? Thx from a ham who also works in public safety. Parallel lifestyles I guess. -KF7UCK
It doesn't handle a BK very well, unfortunately. Best for smaller radios. I've not had any issues with it rubbing my neck when adjusted properly.
@@K6ARK Grrr. I think I need to size up then. I loathe all of the extra pockets on the bigger ones. I just want to hold a BK, a Motorola 800mhz and maybe some sun screen. I work fire, but we collaborate with S&R all the time. They do all of the hauling while we provide medical care. As a result, the most I ever need from extra gear is a GPS coordinate if we call for a helicopter before S&R arrives. If it’s way off the beaten path, I fall into a support role. Can’t we just have a 2 radio chest rig without 20 other pockets?!??!!?!?!!??
I need that same color scheme for my TruSdX
Blast from the past! I just bought a Rockmite kit from OfferUP and is inspired to add the step-up 12v and lithium ion battery with charger to the Rockmite and other builds too....thanks Adam from the past!
Right? Who is that kid? 😆
Have you checked out the ELK 5L logperiodic dual band beam. 9/11 db gain respectively in a 1.5 pound package. I'm surprised how lightweight your beam is. Great stuff.
What a five star day. Combining the skiing/and S2S into a combined adventure video should make it popular among the ham community. Lot of fun! Great video, Adam. Keep the adventure videos coming.73. N7NRE Dave Prescott Valley, Az.
Did you build the yagi antenna or did you get it some places is yhere a video on it

How did he power the trusdx?
Any good videos on how to tie rope to end of wire to pull tight? Been having excellent results just laying along ground or in a loop on ground but now want to experiment with inverted v 👍
Did you try the method I demonstrate in the video?
@@K6ARK That is my plan tonight. In the video it doesn’t really show how to attach a string to the end of you half wave end fed though. Just the loop you tied to attach to a rock
@@full_metal2452 sorry, I misunderstood what you were asking. I use an Albright knot. www.101knots.com/albright-knot.html
Do you have a video that demonstrates building your digital adapter cable?
No, but the build instructions, PCB, and BOM are posted under "3D Prints and PCBs" at www.k6ark.com. the assembly process is very easy.
@@K6ARK cheers mate. Do you have a rough timeline on when you think you will have stocks available again on your Amazon store?
@@SMB_SpeedTwin I don't sell these in my store. I shared all of the files, instructions, and links to parts to simply roll your own.
Ah right thank you! Being in Aus it kept changing my profile to the American Amazon site, I thought I was doing something wrong. This hobby has by far the best type of humans involved. So many people sharing their knowledge, experience and designs. Thanks again mate.
Nice 👌🏼
I’m about to built this kit. I don’t anticipate using a counter poise but what is the downside of putting it there just in case I want to try it out?
There's nothing wrong with that at all. You can always just cut off the stub if you never use it. Be sure to follow the written instructions. They are a little different than the board that I was using in the video.
My already high respect for Adam just went up further when I saw the Single Malt tubes ;-)
Wa6ols Wes here.
Adam you are an inventive ham.
Yes, I used an old iPhone 6. I have also successfully used the lighting to 3.5mm adapter on an iPhone 11.
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful! Good choice of music too!
This is really cool! I want to build an antenna for my QMX (which I should receive in the mail this week) and my rockmite, and this video is a big inspiration. I know this is an old video, so you may not even see this question, but where did you get that box of toroids?
Amidon sells a variety pack that is very useful. I picked up a Plano fishing tackle box with adjustable dividers for storage and organization, then supplemented with additional/other toroids.
Good job. Tell me, while not spoken, is Morse code considered a second language?
I have heard some consider it a language, but I think technically speaking it is probably not. That said, learning Morse has a lot of similarities to learning languages.
Old reply, but awesome video.
Can you get the full 5 watts with that battery? I just ordered one.
Yes, lipo cells (even small ones) are great at putting out higher current (low internal resistance) and can put out full power on the truSDX.
@@K6ARK Right on! Thanks. 73
Thanks for sharing, Adam. I live in Washington State, and this is the first time I have seen them.
What camp were you at? We stayed at Cottonwood but unfortunately didn't know about the lights or I would have stayed up to watch them.
We stayed at Ryan. The pink was apparent by around 10pm, and the peak visibility seemed to be around 11pm to 1am.
Thanks for sharing. It's something I always wanted to see. Good video.
Awesome pictures, thanks for sharing

Thank you, Thank you......Purely amazing.
Awesome antenna. I thought a loop antenna needs an inner loop? How did you get around today? Also are loop antennas less sensitive to proximity to ground?
Amazing.
Thanks for sharing that. Great job on filming it. Beautiful shots. Pat, K7GUD
This is awesome Adam. We saw it in Albuqwleqrqe, but not nearly as dramatic as this.
